NBA Accredited Colleges 2026-27: Is Your Degree Safe?

Washington Accord approved colleges in India 2026–2027.

For students seeking admission to an undergraduate engineering programme in India during the academic year 2026–27, one of the most consequential — yet frequently overlooked — factors in the selection of an institution is the validity period of the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) accreditation of the specific programme under consideration.

Under the Washington Accord, an international framework for the mutual recognition of engineering qualifications across 26 signatory nations, only those engineering graduates whose degree programme carried valid NBA Tier I accreditation at the time of their graduation are eligible for streamlined international recognition. It is therefore insufficient for a programme to be accredited merely at the time of admission — the accreditation must remain valid and uninterrupted through the year in which the student is awarded the degree.

This article presents a structured analysis of NBA accreditation end-dates in the context of a 2026–27 admission, enabling prospective students and their families to make informed decisions regarding the international validity of their engineering qualification.

ℹ To understand what Washington Accord recognition means and the full range of benefits it offers — including CDR exemption for Australian migration and faster professional registration across signatory nations — refer to our detailed guide: What is Washington Accord? Benefits for Indian Engineers

Understanding the Accreditation Validity Requirement

A student admitted to a four-year B.E./B.Tech programme in the academic year 2026–27 is expected to complete the programme and be awarded the degree in June or July 2030. For the degree to carry Washington Accord recognition at the point of graduation, the NBA Tier I accreditation of that specific programme must remain valid through at least 30 June 2030.

For students admitted through the lateral entry route — that is, students commencing directly from the second year of a programme — or those enrolled in a three-year engineering degree, graduation is anticipated in June or July 2029. In such cases, the accreditation must be valid through at least 30 June 2029.

The following classification framework has been applied to all programme-level accreditation records sourced from the National Board of Accreditation (NBA):

Category Accreditation End Year Status for 4-Year Students Status for Lateral Entry / 3-Year Students
Table 1 2031 or beyond ✔ Fully Safe — valid beyond graduation with safety margin ✔ Fully Safe
Table 2 2030 ✔ Safe — covers graduation year exactly, no safety margin ✔ Fully Safe
Table 3 2029 ⚠ Not sufficient — expires one year before graduation ✔ Safe — covers graduation year exactly
Table 4 2028 ⚠ Expires during 2nd year of study ⚠ Expires during 2nd year of study
Table 5 2027 ⚠ Expires during or at end of 1st year ⚠ Expires during 1st year of study

Important Disclosure Regarding Accreditation Renewal

NBA accreditation is not automatically renewed upon expiry. Institutions are required to submit a fresh application for accreditation and undergo a new assessment process. The outcome of such an assessment — whether renewal is granted, and for what duration — cannot be determined in advance. It is therefore entirely possible that a programme listed in Tables 4 or 5 may subsequently receive renewed accreditation prior to a student's graduation, thereby restoring its Washington Accord eligibility.

Equally, it is possible that an institution does not apply for renewal or is denied accreditation upon reassessment. In such an event, students who enrolled on the basis of existing accreditation would graduate from a programme that no longer carries Washington Accord recognition.

Advisory to Prospective Students: The tables presented in this article reflect accreditation data as recorded in the NBA register at the time of publication. This data is subject to change. Prospective students are strongly advised to verify the current and renewed accreditation status of their intended programme directly on the NBA web register at nbaind.org prior to confirming admission, and to periodically recheck during the course of their studies.

TABLE 1 — Programmes Accredited Upto 2031 or Beyond ✔ FULLY SAFE  |  24 Programmes

Fully safe for 4-year admission in 2026–27. Accreditation valid beyond graduation (June/July 2030) with a safety margin of at least one year.
Safety Margin Confirmed: These programmes hold NBA Tier I accreditation valid through 2031 or beyond. A student admitted in 2026–27 and graduating in June/July 2030 will have completed the programme well within the accreditation period. Even in the event of a one-year academic delay, the accreditation remains valid. These programmes represent the most secure choice for Washington Accord recognition.

Accreditation expires during the 2nd year of a 4-year programme and during the 2nd year of a lateral entry programme for 2026–27 admissions.

Caution — Accreditation Expires Mid-Study: A student admitted in 2026–27 will enter the second year of their programme in 2027–28. The accreditation of programmes in this category expires at the end of 2028, meaning these students will spend their third and fourth years — and ultimately graduate — without the programme holding valid NBA Tier I accreditation, unless renewal is secured. This is the largest category in the dataset with 885 programme entries. Many of these are reputed institutions that are expected to apply for renewal; however, the outcome remains uncertain at the time of admission. Students considering programmes in this category should specifically inquire with the institution regarding the status of their NBA renewal application.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Yes. The validity of your engineering degree within India — for employment, higher education, or other domestic purposes — is governed by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and the relevant university affiliation, not by NBA accreditation. NBA Tier I accreditation and Washington Accord recognition are relevant specifically to international professional recognition and skilled migration pathways. The loss of accreditation mid-study does not render your degree invalid domestically.
The NBA does not publicly disclose pending renewal applications in real time. However, prospective students may directly contact the institution's accreditation or academic affairs office and request written confirmation of whether an NBA Tier I renewal application has been submitted and is under review. The NBA web register at nbaind.org is updated when accreditation decisions are finalised.
No. Washington Accord recognition is programme-specific, not institution-specific. A single institution may have certain programmes accredited under NBA Tier I with varying validity periods, while other programmes at the same institution may be accredited under Tier II or may not be accredited at all. Students must verify the accreditation status of their specific intended programme — not merely the institution.
NBA Tier I accreditation is awarded to programmes that meet the graduate attribute and outcome-based education standards aligned with the Washington Accord framework. Tier I programmes are internationally recognised under the Accord. NBA Tier II accreditation covers programmes that meet a different set of quality benchmarks and does not carry Washington Accord recognition. For international professional mobility purposes, only Tier I accreditation is relevant.
As a lateral entry student commencing from the second year of a four-year programme in 2026–27, your expected graduation year is June/July 2029. Tables 1, 2, and 3 are safe for you. Table 3 (valid upto 2029) covers your graduation year exactly, with no safety margin. Tables 4 and 5 represent programmes where accreditation will expire before your graduation, and the same renewal risk advisory applies.
The Washington Accord facilitates both international employment and professional registration in signatory countries — not solely migration. Engineers seeking to work in Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Ireland, and other signatory nations without undergoing additional academic assessment benefit directly from the Accord. For skilled migration specifically, the Accord enables a streamlined skills assessment through Engineers Australia, eliminating the need for a Competency Demonstration Report (CDR).

Conclusion

The decision to pursue an engineering degree is a significant long-term investment, and for students who intend to leverage their qualification for international professional mobility, the accreditation validity period of their chosen programme at the time of graduation is a factor of material consequence.

Programmes listed in Tables 1 and 2 of this article offer the highest degree of certainty for students admitted in 2026–27 — their accreditation is confirmed valid through or beyond the expected graduation date of June/July 2030. Programmes in Table 3 are appropriate for lateral entry or three-year students but carry a renewal risk for regular four-year students. Programmes in Tables 4 and 5 require students to exercise due diligence and seek institutional confirmation of pending NBA renewal applications before making an admission decision.

All prospective students are advised to verify the accreditation status of their specific programme on the NBA web register at nbaind.org prior to admission and to remain informed of any changes in accreditation status during the course of their studies.
